I normally buy turkey breast mince at the supermarket because my wife is on a low sat fat diet. That’s fine, but it doesn’t taste of very much, so I wanted a healthy alternative which had more flavour. This venison mince tastes great, has a far better texture than turkey breast mince and isn’t nearly as fatty as beef mince. I used it simply as mince with onions, which I then turned into a hotpot by cooking it in the oven with slices of potato but the flavour and texture would make it suitable for anything else you do with beef mince, like bolognese or lasagne.

I hadn’t thought of doing venison pasties until I saw Macbeth’s recipe. Absolutely delicious and easy to do. I go walking in the local hills and moors (Welsh Black Mountains) and having a pasty in the pocket is an ideal lunch on a day out. I’ve even worked out a way to warm it up with my camping stove :-), but even cold it’s marvellous to sit on top of a hill, looking out at the wide world, and chomp on a delicious venison pasty, washed down by some local spring water or (if I’m feeling decadent or need extra pick-me-up for the afternoon walk) a dram of Welsh whiskey … yes we do some good stuff here too LOL.

I got this as an alternative to beef mince and especially since I knew it would be low in fat. I’ve made chilli so far and my other half only said it had a good flavour, so no downside.
