Silage Making in Full Swing at Edinvale

Well we managed to make the most of some good weather up here at Edinvale and we are well through our first cut of silage. It is essential that we make a good job of this and that the silage is in as good a condition as can be when we bail it as it is the staple diet for all our cattle right throughout the winter.
When we talk about silage, what we are essentially doing is cutting the grass and then bailing it into big round bails before it is properly dried out (as in hay). These in turn are wrapped in plastic (heavy duty cling film basically) which preserves the silage through the winter and provides high quality feed for the cattle.
This summer though we have also looking to make a field of hay. This is the ultimate goal but more often than not the weather is not kind enough up here to give us a week of completely dry and sunny weather that is required for hay making, but we are keeping our fingers crossed! Long may this good weather last!
